Differences and characteristics between PLC and DCS:
The birth of a pair of industrial control partners, PLC and DCS, is very different: Modicon developed a PLC system in 1968, which was mainly used to replace relays in automotive production lines to achieve control purposes. Only four years later, Honeywell developed a DCS system. Of course, unlike PLC, which immediately threw itself into production lines with harsh environments, DCS’s treatment is significantly better than his “brother”, but it is also significantly more delicate than PLC, which enjoys air conditioning in the control room. In this case, although both are industrial control devices, their different birth backgrounds make PLC and DCS play their respective roles in production control in the manufacturing industry, with their respective characteristics:
First of all, this innate purpose led to the PLC being just a control “device”. As a substitute for relays, in its early days, PLC was only used to store instructions for performing logical operations, sequential control, timing, counting, and arithmetic operations; Digital input and output operations are used to control various types of machinery or production processes. This characteristic leads to its general use in smaller self-control locations, and its extensibility is not strong.
